Syslog based centralized log management with event log manager

These days most organizations invest on more than log management infrastructures which comprise the hardware, software and a media to generate, transmit, store, analyze and organize the log data. Every log management infrastructure has a typical architecture consisting of various components which interact with one another. Following are the major tiers of an ideal log management architecture.

Log generation: This tier consists of the hosts that run the logging client application to make log data available to log servers through a network.

Log analysis and storage: This tier consists of one or more log servers to receive log data from the log hosts of the first tier. Those log servers which receive log data from multiple log hosts are also termed as aggregators or collectors. Log servers can store log data themselves or in separate databases.

Log monitoring: This tier consists of consoles that are used to monitor the log data and log analysis results, as these consoles sometimes support report generation.

Communication between the components of a log management infrastructure takes place over regular networks. Separate logging networks are used mainly to collect data generated from event logs of devices such as firewalls, routers and network intrusion detection systems. Keeping the physical and logical network separate also helps in prevents tapping the log data during transmission over the network.

Log management infrastructures are usually based on two categories of log management software, viz., Syslog based centralized logging software and Event management software.
