Can't collect events

I am trying to collect events without an agent from 'localhost'. However in Activity Log I get following message:

Failed to get events from Application' Log of Computer : LOCALHOST
Reason : Cannot open log Application on machine LOCALHOST. Windows has not provided an error code.

My Windows account has administrator permissions and I can browse logs in Event Viewer.
